Ship Bottom New Jersey is the first town you enter when crossing the Causeway bridge to Long Beach Island. The unique name comes from an old ship wreck. During a fierce storm, an Italian merchant ship ran aground off the coast of Ship Bottom. When rescuers arrived at the vessel, it was found that all passengers and crew were dead except for one lone woman who was pounding on the hull of the now capsized vessel. As she was taken from the bottom of the ship, the name “ship bottom” stuck! Ship Bottom NJ on Long Beach Island tends to be one of the more crowded areas on Long Beach Island due to the close proximity to the bridge and the natural width of LBI at this point in the Island. Ship Bottom is located between Surf City to the north and Brant Beach to the south.
