Ship Bottom Real Estate
Ship Bottom NJ on Long Beach Island New Jersey
Ship Bottom, NJ, on Long Beach Island, tends to be one of the more popular and, therefore, more crowded areas due to its close proximity to the bridge and the natural width of LBI at this point in the Island. It is a popular community with a healthy mix of residnetal homes and local businesses. Ship Bottom is located between Surf City to the north and Brant Beach to the south.
Ship Bottom's History
Ship Bottom New Jersey is the first town you enter when crossing the Causeway bridge to Long Beach Island. The unique name comes from an old shipwreck in the early 1800's. During a fierce storm, a ship, whose name has been lost to history, ran aground off the coast of Ship Bottom. When rescuers arrived at the vessel, it was found that all passengers and crew were dead except for one lone woman who was pounding on the hull of the now-capsized vessel. As she was taken from the bottom of the ship, the name "ship bottom" stuck! Interestingly enough, the iconic town logo of a ship lying on its side is not this lost vessel. The locally famous image of Ship Bottom is based on the wreck of an Italian ship, the "Fortuna" which ran around in 1910.
